Would you rather be a prole, filthy but free, or a party member, educated but dispensable?

  2. I would rather be a prole. The proles were left alone and free to do what they pleased. Although clearly they were the minority group in the story, there was a hope that Winston believed they would eventually rise up against the party. I, personally, would rather be free and filthy than forced to re-write history, be watched by party members on telescreens, and live in fear of Big Brother.

  3. I definitely agree with Jess. The life that Winston lived seemed so incredibly dull and miserable. If I had the chance to be free, I would take it - filthy or not. Although we are never given the perspective of a prole in the book, I can imagine it would be a much better life to lead than that of the people under the totalitarian control of Big Brother.

  4. I agree with Jess and Maeve. I would much rather be a prole because even though they are poor and filty, they have freedom. They are not watched as intently as the Party members, and have a chance to live their life. Winston had to live with no privacy because he was constantly under the watchful eye of Big Brother and the Party members.

  5. I also agree with both Jess, Maeve, and Aisling. Even though the Party members were educated, they did not draw their own conclusions from their knowledge, but believed exactly what they were told. Winston realized that he was one of the few that did not hold the cookie-cutter beliefs of the party members and he would not accept the ideas he was told to believe. I feel that being a prole, even if I was not held to a higher standard, would be a much better situation. Not each and every one of your thoughts or actions is monitered as closely. By how they were described in the book, it seemed they had more of a carefree way of living. Sometimes a simple life is better, and freedom is one of the most cherished gifts in a person's life.

  6. I also agree with Jess, Maeve, Aisling, and Melissa. By being a prole, you were able to maintain your freedom because to Big Brother and other authority like the Party members in the "utopia" proles were not seen as a threat. The Party members were educated which resulted in a closer watch because of the knowledge and education they possessed. As a proble being filthy is something i would have to put up with but i could go about my life as i pleased not being watched on a television screen like the seasons new sitcom. As a prole i would value my freedom and live with the filth. I would not have to be as conscious about my speech and could lead a simpler yet more fulfilling life. If others who were proles understood the type of freedom they have they could eventually maybe revolt like Winston had hoped. All in all i would choose the life of a prole.:)

  7. I also agree with jess and maeve. All party members are easily replaceable. If you get too smart, the party has to destroy you in order to protect themselves. To survive as a party member you have to lie to yourself, you have to "unthink" what you know is the truth. I rather live as a filty, unintelligent prole and be free. I rather live in terrible homes than be constantly watch by "Big Brother."

  8. I think I would rather be a prole as well. Even thoguh we were able to read more directly about the party members, I think that it is clear that, although they were filthy, the proles had some sense of dignity. The party members may have thought they were above the proles, but in all actuality, I think they were putting on an act. I wouldn't never want to live such a constrained life.

  9. Like everyone else, I would also like to be a prole. I think the most important thing in life is happiness. Even if i had no money and was part of a secluded group, i would still be happy because i would be free. I couldnt imagine living in a world where people would be under constant supervision.

  10. I agree with everyone. I would rather live as a prole because they do not have much to worry about. Their burdens are much less than that of the party members. Winston had to face constant fear and anxiety. He didn't even agree to the way he was living his life. He broke the rules and bought a journal for his thoughts. I would trade off my education in order to be free. The way Winston lived his life is nothing desirable.

  12. So who holds more power- Winston had the power to do something, but the proles never even realized their potential? What do you think?

  13. I agree with all of the above statements. I would rather be a free but filthy prole than an educated and dispensable party member. I would never be able to live under the strict restrictions that are placed on the community. I also crave excitement and variation in my life. I do not like boring routines. I also think that if the proles realized their potential, they would have more power. The party members created a society where it was extremely difficult to go against the laws, for many reasons, and is the reason WInston was pulled back into it all at the end.

  14. I agree with the group, I would much rather live as a filthy prole. When you think about it, what benefits do the party members actually have? Sure, they receive an education but, what good is their education if they don’t have the freedom or opportunity to use it. Also, the information they are taught is really meaningless lies that are concocted in order to justify the actions of Big Brother. The life of a prole may seem unglamorous, but they have freedom. In life isn’t freedom all that really matters?

  15. I feel like being a nonconformist, (and I know I'm late but I feel like talking anyways) but I would rather be a party member. I'd rather be aware of the world around me even if it's painful or full of lies. I don't believe in the saying that "Ignorance is bliss". Both sides really don't receive any more information than the other, but I feel that even the tiniest of the truth that is somewhere within all the lies, is worth something. Where a prole stands, they have almost no opportunity to seek reality. For a party member, the chances are also slim, but at least those chances are there.

  16. Did winston really have any power though? Not even his thoughts were private. If winston could think of a plan to escape, the party would already be two steps ahead of him. The proles may not realize there their potential but neither, Winston nor the proles, truely have any power to over come the party

  17. In regards to Mrs. Moser's question: Winston holds more power because he has knowledge. He holds old memories that everyone one else in Airstrip 1 seemed to have lost. What he lacks is confidence because Big Brother is watching him along with everyone else. He is alone and has good reason to believe much won't change if he takes a stand. The proles live with ignorance. They don't realize what they are capable of. The proles are at a disadvantage and can't take any steps towards changing how their nation is because they don't understand what is presently occuring in their community.

  18. I would definitely want to be a prole. I would only want to be a prole for the mere fact that they have freedom of some sort. I could not possible imagine a life without freedom. It honestly terrifies me. I would hate to be monitored 24/7 by party members on telescreens, and have to constantly be thinking and fearing Big Brother. The prole may not be educated and are filthy but at least they have their freedom.

  19. I'm going to have to agree with the general consensus and would much rather be a filthy prole. I agree with Sarah; confined living, its mundane nature, and constantly being watched by Big Brother would not suit me and that the proles could have banded and realized their potential power. However, I see that Myra has made an excellent point by stating that a speck of truth amongst a world of lies speaks a multitude.

  20. In regards to everyone else's commments I would want to be a filthy Prole. Prole's did indeed have much more freedom unlike Winston. Winston had no freedom, even his thoughts and actions were looked at and analyzed. Also, Winston having to worship "Big Brother", no that is definetly something I could not see myself doing. I am my own person, I have my own beliefs and I would not want a "Big Brother" type figure telling me the ways I have to live my life. Even though the proles are filthy and disgusting at least they get to live their own life!
